The country has just emerged from one of the most blistering heat waves on record. Unless you immersed yourself in cool water for the duration, or turned the AC on full blast and stayed indoors for days at a time, there was no way to keep cool. The body’s natural reaction to days like these is to sweat. Sweating helps regulate body temperature by keeping the body cool as it evaporates.
Why Does Sweat Smell Bad?
We have sweat glands all over our bodies, but they are most numerous on the armpits, groin, soles of feet, the palms, and the forehead. Humans have three types of sweat glands. One is present at birth and the other two become activated during puberty. Contrary to what you might think, sweat, which is mostly water and salts, doesn’t smell bad. Body odor results when the chemical compound secretions of sweat glands are metabolized by bacteria on the skin that multiply rapidly in the presence of sweat. When sweat remains on skin – like on these hot and humid days, or when your feet are encased in socks and boots all day in winter – and it interacts with the skin’s bacteria, we get that telltale smell of body odor or smelly feet.
