New York Fashion Week, Spring/Summer 2019, is officially wrapped and who better to close it out than Rihanna who mounted a full-scale production to showcase her Savage x Fenty Fall 2018 lingerie collection? This, the brand’s first runway show, was a celebration of womanhood. The collection was presented theatrically with dancers, acrobats and models, including Gigi and Bella Hadid as well as a gorgeous cast of women in various shapes, sizes and ethnicities. The show also included two pregnant models to further celebrate womanhood and to further the point that fashion should be for everyone, regardless of size or body shape. I only wish that Rihanna had included several older models to make the point even stronger. As I watched the video, the absence of older models, in a largely inclusive cast, was sadly apparent.
As for the lingerie, animal prints, mesh, fishnet, day-glo looks and high-cut bodysuits dominated, but there were also more casual looks that included menswear-inspired cotton briefs.
Rihanna took a turn on the runway at the end of the presentation and, with its success, added lingerie-designer to her ever-increasing resume.
