The weather outside was frightful but inside the Arc at Moynihan Station, the site for Dennis Basso’s Fall 2016 New York Fashion Week collection, the air was warm, rarefied and tinged with excitement as beautiful people, including celebrities from stage and screen, awaited the entrance of Basso’s first model. And the second she hit the catwalk, it was ON. To say that Basso is known for his fur designs is both obvious and ignorant of the designer’s talent. His elegant, timeless and gorgeous evening wear is as much a part of Basso’s art as is his way with furs and exotic skins. The inspiration for Dennis Basso’s Fall 2016 show was “the natural untamed beauty of the modern woman who is effortlessly both wild and elegant, influenced by the deep winter woods, mystery and intrigue.” His first look, a delicate lace dress, fitted with a crocodile bodice, embodies this and the procession of gorgeous women, hair slicked back into low ponytails, wearing satin, lace, velvet and, of course, fur, in colors reminiscent of winter woods, emphasized it. Dennis Basso’s Fall 2016 Collection is, in a word, sumptuous.
