My name is Melody Lesser and I am a sockaholic. That’s right. I collect socks. Remember the recent sockless trend when women eschewed them, even in the winter months? I tried it but after stepping into a freezing cold puddle of melted snow in my apparently not leak-proof snow boots, I knew it wasn’t for me. I love socks. The more I have to choose from, the happier I am. (Selfish plug: My birthday is coming up in a few weeks. Socks are welcome. Thank you in advance.)
Want to hear a little about my sock collection? Come on, it’ll be fun, I promise. Ok, I have a pair of socks that were a premium from New York Magazine’s Holiday issue – when Absolut Vodka did those great ads. They were tucked into an Absolut ad in the centerfold and are printed with a crossword puzzle with only the words “Absolut Vodka” filled in. If I’m not mistaken, they’re from the mid-1990s – and I’ve never worn them.
A friend bought me three pairs of beautiful socks for my birthday in the early 1990s. I became sentimental about them because I was moving out of the neighborhood and have kept them, unworn, all these years. (I also kept up the friendship. She is still very dear to me.) I was late to the Target/Missoni collaboration of about three years ago and, happily for me, the only things left were, hurray, socks! I bought a pair for myself and one for each of my daughters. Those I wear. A lot. I have a pair of “toe socks” from, hm, I don’t even know from where or when they hail but they are miserably uncomfortable but so damn cute, I kept them. I have socks with dogs, cats and kissy lips on them.
Those three are from another friend who knows of my sock love, and I have several pairs of the cushiest and most luxurious cashmere socks from a friend whose husband is vice president of a major socks company. I have been the happy beneficiary of her largesse many times.
The sockless trend is over; the cold weather is coming and I’m in the mood – and in the market – for a few good pairs. Enter Posie Turner, founded by a woman named Leslie who – there’s another one! – has always had a thing for socks. A self-professed sock collector, Leslie is also a designer of some of the cutest socks around. Besides being fashionable (of course socks can be fashionable!), Posie Turner socks sport an inspirational message on the left foot of every pair. Now I can coordinate my socks to my outfit and my mood! I’m gonna need another sock drawer – or two.
Check out the line for yourself. You might just become a sockaholic too. Or, since the holidays are coming up, give a couple of pairs as gifts. They make great gifts. Just ask … me! (November 23rd, don’t forget!)
