Harriet Posnak Lesser has been named Free Cell champion of 2015. Posnak Lesser, one of the youngest players ever to win the coveted title, came to the game late in life after finding herself permanently glued to her desk chair following a lengthy bout with unemployment and chronic boredom.
What made her choose Free Cell? “I didn’t at first. I tried more technologically advanced games like Candy Crush and Tetris but they made my head hurt,” Posnak Lesser explains, adding, “I guess I’m a Pac Man girl at heart.”
“I also downloaded a game called Family Jewels but it wasn’t what I expected. As a dedicated Solitaire fan from the age of three, it was only natural that I would be drawn to Free Cell. Black jack on red queen.”
Our first-time champion credits hard work, determination and a really good heating pad as the major reasons for her success. “I didn’t start out to be a Free Cell champ,” she says modestly, “but opportunity knocks in strange ways. Thank goodness for the last Recession. Since I could no longer afford therapy, I turned to computer games as a substitute for sanity. Free Cell was my strong suit if you’ll forgive the pun. I used to be a humor writer, sob. Red three on black four.”
Posnak Lesser, who insists she is not addicted, says she plays Free Cell 12 hours a day during the week and round the clock on weekends. That kind of dedication exacts a high price, she notes, citing a weight gain of 50 pounds and two carpal tunnel surgeries with a third scheduled for New Year’s Eve. “”It’ll give me something to do,” she explains, adding, “Black 9 on red 10.”
The coveted Free Cell trophy (a gold-plated Ace of Spades emoticon) will be awarded to Posnak Lesser sometime after lunch next Tuesday or whenever. What does the future hold for our iconic super achiever? “I’m planning to drop computer games in 2016 and start traveling,” she says. “First stop? Kim Kardashian: Hollywood.”
