By now youâve no doubt read the recaps on Golden Globes fashion. But, in case you havenât, Iâm going to weigh in on the looks that fired up the red carpet as well as those that went down in flames.
Kate Hudson in a bodycon Versace
But first, some trendspotting: White gowns were hot and spotted on Jemima Kirke who wore Rosie Assoulin; Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace; Emily Blunt in custom Michael Kors; Julia Louis Dreyfus in Narciso Rodriguez; Felicity Hufman in Lorena Sarbu; Tina Fey in custom Antonio Berardi; Salma Hayek in Alexander McQueen; Kristen Wiig in Delphine Manivet and brand-new mum, Rosamund Pike in Vera Wang.
Metallics were another trend and some got it way right while others looked like a disco ball. Jessica Chastain looked like a goddess in bronze Atelier Versace. Others who embraced heavy metal: Julianne Moore in GIvenchy Couture, Diane Kruger in Emilia Wickstead, Dakota Johnson in Chanel Couture, Ellie Kemper in Naeem Khan and Reese Witherspoon in Calvin Klein.
Jenna Dewan Tatum brings some sunshine to the Golden Globes red carpet.
Yellow is a difficult color to wear because it can be unflattering to skin tones but several stars captured the sun and looked beautiful doing it including  Naomi Watts in Gucci, Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann in Giulietta, Leslie Mann in Kaufmann Franco and Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Carolina Herrera.
Emma Stone in Lanvin at the 2015 Golden Globes
Emma Stone rocked the menswear trend in a strapless silver beaded and black jumpsuit that sported a huge bow in the back, by Lanvin. Lorde wore Narciso Rodriguezâs feminine version of a tuxedo.
Beading, cutouts, thigh-high slits, trains out-to——there and color rounded out some of the other notable trends.
And now, my picks for best and worst dressed.
BEST DRESSED
Julia Goldani Telles in Carmen Marc ValvoTaylor Schilling in custom Ralph Lauren. There’s something about red on a blonde – and she paired her beautifully-cut dress with a great red lip for a look that was just lovely.Jane Fonda in Versace. No words. Just look at her.Salma Hayek Pinault in Alexander McQueenCamila Alves in Monique Lhullier. The color of this dress reminds me of a vintage Barbie doll dress.Lupita Nyongâo in Giambattista ValliJessica Chastain in Atlelier VersaceAllison Williams in Armani PriveEmily Blunt in custom Michael KorsJulianne Moore in Givency Couture
WORST DRESSEDÂ – and Iâm sorry. I kind of hate to hate on anyone so prepare for disclaimers.
Ruth WIlson in Prada. I knew this was Prada before I knew it was Prada. Having said that – and you can read into it what you wish, the color is great for her skin and hair. Redheads look great in green, although Iâd have preferred a deeper shade than this Granny Smith apple green. The dress, overall, is simply not flattering. Ruth Wilson is a beautiful woman but this dress does her no favors.
Kerry Washington in Mary Katrantzou. I donât know what she or her stylist were thinking. Kerry Washington has scored many home runs on the red carpet but this mash-up of color with its overpowering silhouette swallows her up and makes her look, dare I say it?, dowdy.Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad. Most people put Jennifer Lopez on their best dressed list but, for me, itâs enough with the sexpot thing already. Sheâs gorgeous from head to toe and the dress is pretty but Iâd like to see her in something less sexy and more old Hollywood glam. Even if sheâd taken the simple step of wearing her hair up, Iâd like this look better.Rosamund Pike in Vera Wang. To be fair, Rosamund Pike gave birth about a month ago – and she looks awesome. Plus, the dress is pretty but itâs just a bit too revealing for my taste. Raise the neckline, fill in the cutouts and now weâre talking elegant.Keira Knightley in custom Chanel. A baby bump is hiding underneath those fluttering butterflies and theyâre kinda cool but the ruffled bib neckline and hemline are reminiscent of Little House on the Prairie. (I cannot believe I am going against my beloved Chanel but this dress doesnât do it for me. And, by the way, the lines are deeply divided on this look with about as many loving it as hating on it.)And, another miss for Chanel, imo: Dakota Johnson in Chanel Couture. I disliked this dress much more when I saw it  on TV on the red carpet. I’ve changed my mind now that I look at it in a still photo. I am loving the skirt but the top, sigh. reminds me of 1970s disco fashion. Although, to be fair, maybe it was quite smashing in person. (Forgive me, Herr Lagerfeld.)
Predictions on how this yearâs Golden Globes will change fashion, at least on the red carpet: Look for elbow-length gloves at awards shows to come, a la Amal Alamuddin Clooney who paired her black Dior Haute Couture gown with white gloves from her own collection. Look for more gowns with long sleeves. Look for menswear inspired evening looks and full skirts paired with bodycon tops a la Salma Hayek and Felicity Jones who was gorgeous in teal blue Christian Dior.
spot on !! So agree!! and add Katie Holmes & Katherine Heigl to the best dress list please!
Lol! Thank you! I didn’t add Katherine Heigl to my best dressed list for perhaps a bad reason. I saw at least one other similar (or same) Zac Posen last night. Unfair of me, but that’s how I called it. As for Katie Holmes, I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t see her last night. Will have to check out her look … xo, Mel
