CALIFORNIA CHIC

Sometimes less is more as displayed by Mark & Estel whose eco-friendly, California-chic collection relied heavily on natural fabrics. In fact, every item in their largely black and white collection was made of jeans, tee shirts or sweatshirts. The collection, which will appeal to the very young, featured booty shorts with bra tops, flirty skirts and low-slung pants. Their most successful pieces were their long body-conscious dresses that had an air of sophistication and contrasted sharply with their otherwise fun-in-the-sun pieces. Accessories included wide, floppy-brimmed hats and long, flowing bow ties. (Some of these looks were reminiscent of Rachel Zoe and I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn’t The Lovely Zoe on the runway.) At the end of the show, Mark and Estel treated attendees to a quickie rock number. A good time was had by all. – Written by Melody Lesser
FABRIC

In stark contrast to the cotton-heavy Mark & Estel Collection, Monique Lhuillier, opted for shiny and metallic-finish fabrics such as satin and silk and glittery fabrics for her plethora of gowns and dresses. Her take on evening was soft, feminine and uber-modern. Zimmermann also favored metallic hues in suiting. – Written by Shalanda Turner, FashionMingle.net Style Editor

Pastels ruled the runways on Day 2 of New York Fashion Week. Charlotte Ronson featured peach, pale blue and pale green hues while the collection from Zimmerman featured pale blues and metallics in gold and peach. And while she showed a pop of pastels here and there, Trina Turk stood by her claim to fame and design aesthetic of using bold and vibrant colors. It appears that even if pastels are trending, Trina will rebel and stay bold – and who can blame her? The scene during her presentation was fun and flirty and the bold hues added to the playfulness of the collection. Written by Shalanda Turner

Trina Turk collection’s was not only playful, it was reminiscent of the 60s, to wit: the wide scarf headbands sported by many of the models. Bold statement necklaces and handbags of all shapes and sizes added to the fun mix. Popular in both the Charlotte Ronson and Trina Turk collections were these comfortable looking sandals. Is the gladiator sandal being replaced next season as the it-shoe for Spring? Written by Shalanda Turner

Nicole Miller is known for her fabulous prints and her latest collection did not disappoint. Birds, palm trees and floral prints reminded one of Brazil, the source of Miller’s inspiration for this collection. But these are not in-your-face, loud prints. Under Miller’s deft hand, they are sophisticated, modern and oh so wearable. Flirty mini-skirts, oxford shirts and a pretty palette of pastels were the order of the day at Charlotte Ronson. Large polka dots and floral prints in lovely shades of pastels are sure to be embraced, especially by younger patrons. – Written by Melody Lesser
