MAYIM BIALIK DESIGNS FOR HOPE PAIGE
A while back, while out to lunch with several friends, I noticed that one of my friends was wearing a pretty bracelet. I complimented her on it and was surprised when she responded that it was a medical alert bracelet. I knew she had been diagnosed with diabetes as a young child. I also knew that she wore a medical alert bracelet but I was under the impression that medical jewelry, while it served a life-saving purpose, was, well, ugly. Her bracelet was elegantly simple, a medallion on a pretty twisted red and silver cord. She explained that she had several medical alert pieces of jewelry, all attractive and trendy yet all of which could save her life in an emergency.
Segue to Mayim Bialik, one of the stars of television’s number one comedy, The Big Bang Theory. (Stay with me. I’ll tie this together for you in a minute.) For those who may be unaware, Emmy-nominated Bialik came to the attention of the public when she portrayed a young Bette Midler in the movie Beaches, went on to star in the sitcom Blossom and currently plays neurobiologist Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory. It’s not a far cry from Dr. Bialik’s real-life education in Neuroscience for which she earned her Ph.D. Bialik, hosts a blog for the website Kveller, is a mother of two, an Orthodox Jew and often writes about her religion as it relates to her career and childrearing. The word kvell is Yiddish and means to be so proud of something that it physically hurts – in a good way. To wit: “My daughter graduated Magna Cum Laude from NYU and I am kvelling so that I am about to burst.”
Bialik, who is a huge supporter of children’s causes and has become something of a child-rearing guru, has teamed up with Hope Paige, makers of fashionable medical ID accessories, to create a customized bracelet that will raise awareness for illnesses close to her heart such as epilepsy, cancer, diabetes and allergies – and potentially save children’s lives. Bialik’s bracelet is available for purchase and 100% of profits from sales will go towards the Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Says Bialik about her design, “Hope Paige Medical ID bracelets can help save a child’s life during an emergency. I am designing a stylish and life-saving bracelet to benefit the building of the Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center.”
I couldn’t find any hard and fast statistics on how many people wear medical alert jewelry but, according to many health websites, the list of people who should wear it includes those with diabetes, heart disease, food allergies, hypertension, allergies to medicine, asthma, Alzheimer’s or impaired cognitive function, COPD and epilepsy. The list continues. I didn’t include all conditions in this post. Many websites go on to say that caregivers should also wear medical alert jewelry and there’s even medical alert jewelry for pets.
The fact is that medical alert jewelry saves lives. Emergency medical professionals look for a medical ID on the wrists or around the necks of patients they’re assessing or treating. Essentially, this jewelry, which you customize to your specific needs, speaks for you in the event that you’re unable to speak for yourself.
