Everyone was talking about Claire Danes’s bob. Did she or didn’t she chop off her locks? Only her stylist knows for sure and he’s dishing …
Hairstylist Peter Butler was the visionary behind Claire Danes’s faux bob, or fob as it’s being called. Here are the steps he took to create the look:
First Peter prepped the hair by applying a few pumps of Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Formula Hair Serum ($9.99 at drugstores) through Claire’s wet hair. He then added Frizz-Ease Curl Reviver Styling Mousse ($6.99 at drugstores) before blow-drying to give the hair more texture for better workability and hold. Next – and here’s where the illusion begins – Peter gave Claire a low side part and then used a large-barreled curling iron to curl her hair inward, which also helped to smooth out the hair’s texture. Peter then created two small pin curls at the nape of Claire’s neck and combed the top of her hair down and under, pinning as needed into the base. To finish off the look, Peter tucked the hair on the left side of Claire’s head behind her ear and gave it a spritz of Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray ($5.99 at drugstores.) To ensure that Claire’s fob glistened under all the lights on the red carpet, Peter also applied a coat of John Frieda Frizz-Ease 100% Shine ($5.99 at drugstores). The results? Gorgeous!
To accompany her teal Zac Posen gown, Avon Global Celebrity Makeup Artist Lauren Andersen played up Jane Krakowski’s eyes with the same deep blue-green shade. A dusty pink lip and ginger spiced cheeks complemented the bold eye.
Here’s how Lauren created the look:
1. Jane’s skin was prepped and brows were groomed with Votre Vu Brow Wax.
2. YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat Illuminating Foundation was applied using a foundation brush and then a wet sponge to blend and press in the foundation.
3. Avon True Color Eyeshadow Quad in Glow Teal was applied along the lash line followed by the #3 shade in the palette which was brushed across the lash line. Then, a thin line of the #4 shade was applied on top.
4. Avon SUPERSHOCK Gel Eyeliner in Blackout was applied using a cream eyeshadow brush. The shadow and liner were buffed together, allowing the Glow Teal shades to pop out from behind.
6. To finish the eyes, Jane’s lashes were curled with an eyelash curler and then brushed with Avon Mega Effects Mascara in Black.
7. Hourglass Illume Crème-To-Powder in Bronze Light followed by Laura Mercier Fresh Ginger Blush were then applied to Jane’s cheeks.
To complete the look, Avon Ultra Color Lipstick in Carnation was brushed onto lips.
Rose Byrne was one of my favorites of the evening. I thought everything about her, from her dress to her makeup to her hair, was perfection. Stylist Harry Josh, inspired by Bianca Jagger‘s hair from the 1970s/80s, gave Rose a modern and polished version of the wild waves. Below are the steps he took to create her sleek look, using products from John Frieda Hair Care.
Josh prepped Rose’s wet hair by applying Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Original Formula ($9.99 at drugstores.) He then applied Frizz-Ease Curl Reviver Styling Mousse ($6.99 at drugstores) throughout to create the texture needed for the waves, and then blow-dried the hair with his Pro Tools Pro Dryer 2000, $300, using the wider nozzle to help build volume. (The dryer is available at Hairenvy.com,) For the style, Josh wrapped hair in Velcro rollers and allowed it to set for 30 minutes. Then, using a curling iron with a ¾ inch barrel, he wrapped ¼ inch sections of hair around the iron horizontally and in the same direction and pinned each curl with a duckbill clip. To finish, Josh let the waves down and flipped them over to mist Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray ($5.99 at drugstores) in order to ensure the style looked perfect all night long.
The inspiration for Julie Bowen‘s cosmetic look was the light pink trumpet-style Zac Posen gown she wore to the 2013 Emmy Awards. Make-up Artist Heather Currie explains how she created the look:
“I started with Neutrogena Healthy Skin Primer to even and brighten the skin, while extending the wear of Julie’s makeup – an essential step for such an important day. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup in Fresh Beige was then applied to the entire face for a fresh and natural glow. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Brightening Eye Perfector in Light and Neutrogena 3-in-1 Concealer were blended thoroughly and applied under the eyes to conceal and protect the delicate skin with SPF 25. To finish, a little dusting of Neutrogena Shine Control Powder set the look and let her natural glow shine through, while eliminating shine throughout the evening. Neutrogena Crease Proof Eye Shadow in Constant Copper was used as a highlight on Julie’s cheek bone and around the eye area to make her eyes pop. Even though it says eye shadow, you can use it on the cheek as a brow bone highlight also. Another tip to this look was two different eye liner colors as we didn’t want the traditional black rimmed eye. Using Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Liner in Brushed Pewter (a grey on top) for a subtle but effective look and Nourishing Eye Liner in Spiced Chocolate along the bottom lashes to make her eyes stand out really made all of the difference when it came to framing her eyes. Using Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Berry Bright was key to giving a contemporary look and a pop of color to Julie’s face. We didn’t want her lips to be as pale as her dress but wanted to create a pop of color that would stand out. Products that can multi-task are another of my favorite tricks. Using a Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Fresh Papaya was key as a cream blush on her cheeks – this is also great for Fall’s color palette. I also highlighted Julie’s brow bone using Neutrogena Crease Proof Eye Shadow in Constant Copper for contrast.”
- Apply a dime size amount of Wella Professionals Oil Reflections to damp hair for protection and added shine.
- Spread Wella Professionals Extra Volume Mousse through root to tips.
- Create side part and blow dry with round brush
- Use ½ inch curling iron to create waves and pin curls, let cool and brush them out softly.
- Mist Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray to set look for an all-night hold.
- Inspiration: “We are going back to blonde again for her Betty role”
- Color: The color is light golden blonde with icy cool highlights to give her that old Hollywood Glamour. I used Wella Professionals ILLUMINA color (an Allure Magazine Breakthrough Award Winner) to enhance shine and keep January’s hair in the healthiest condition possible as she is often adventurous with her color changes.
To complement her structured Herve Leger dress, stylist Jonathan Hanousek created this Relaxed Romantic Faux Bob on Brooke Burke. Here’s how he created the look …
Wen Pomegranate Nourishing Mousse was applied to towel dried hair to create volume and hold. Jonathan then created a side part with his fingers and scrunched the hair to create waves. Hair was then dried with a blow dryer set to medium heat and with the diffuser attached. A 1” curling iron was used to refine the curls on the surface and around the face. To maintain a natural texture, he curled each piece of hair in the direction it had dried and applied a dime size amount of Wen Pomegranate Finishing Treatment Crème throughout the hair to give the curls definition and separation. The hair was then loosely gathered and twisted into a ponytail just above the shoulders. Jonathan pinned the pony band at the nape with bobbie pins to create an anchor for the twisted bun. He then wrapped the remaining ends and secured them with more pins, tucking one side loosely behind the ear. To complete the look, he pinned up any stray curls that seemed out of place and finished everything off with White Sands Stuck Up Mega Hold Hairspray.
