NEW YORK FASHION WEEK, SPRING/SUMMER 2014
New York Fashion Week SS 2014 is over, even as Fashion Month marches on down runways in London, Milan and Paris. It was a whirlwind week as shows were held all over the city with, of course, Lincoln Center at the hub of the activity.
Fashion Week is as exhausting as it is exhilarating. It’s as much fun as it is hard work. I prepare for weeks before by making connections, scoring invitations and shopping for the shows and after-parties. (I know. It sounds awful, doesn’t it? I get the irony.) I thrill at every invitation that I receive. I rearrange my entire schedule, make apologies to friends and family who I know I won’t see or perhaps even speak with for several weeks and rely heavily on my husband who, bless him, does his best to rearrange his schedule to accommodate mine. I pack a month’s worth of clothes for a week’s worth of events and, of course, struggle the most with the shoes. My feet bear the brunt of Fashion Week and, at the end of the second day, they are barely able to walk out my apartment door, let alone crisscross the city as I go from one show to the next.
I can barely comprehend the amount of work that the designers have to put in to mount a show that is over in a matter of minutes. But oh, those minutes! The excitement begins even as I walk into Lincoln Center. Crowds of people, many of them dressed to be seen, flock to Lincoln Center, stand in long lines and eventually take their seats in a designated room to attend the shows. As the crowds file in, the people-gazing begins. I always do my best to try to spot celebrities and fashion notables. I also try to do my best to be surreptitious when I take their photos with my iPhone. The excitement mounts as the seats become filled. My heart beats fast when the plastic covering on the runway is rolled up, the music changes and the show begins. And then my heart stops beating for the fifteen or twenty minutes of the show’s duration as I watch model after model float down the runway. I try to take the best photos I can – but it’s often impossible to get a good shot. (I rely on photos sent to me by the designers’ public relations reps to illustrate many of my posts.)
And then the show is over. In a matter of minutes, the magic dissipates as the lights come up and editors, bloggers and attendees race off to other shows or into the New York afternoon.

Some trends spotted on the runways that you may want next spring:
Florals, mixed patterns and brights with an emphasis on tangerine and lemon yellow dominated many of the collections for Spring/Summer 2014. White, as an accent or overall color scheme continues to be strong. Cropped tops and sheer fabrics show off the body. (Sit ups, anyone? Midsections will be on view next spring.) Designers looked back to the 70s and 80s and brought us versions of high waisted, wide legged pants; suiting and bow collared blouses. There were beautiful tailored and ladylike looks but comfortable slouchy silhouettes ruled. And, while many have proclaimed the death of nail art, it was evident, albeit not as ubiquitous, on many models’ fingertips. Want to get a jump on spring hair trends? Tie yours into a low, sleek ponytail or a messy bun and you’re there.
