ZAYNA GOLD HEALING THROUGH MOVEMENT DVD
If I lived in Boston, I’d be a regular at Zayna Gold’s Boston Body fitness studios. Luckily for me – and you – we can still take advantage of Gold’s expertise and encouragement by simply popping one of her DVDs into the DVR.
I just worked out to Zayna Gold Presents Healing Through Movement, Pilates Head to Toe, a full-body workout designed for people with Crohn’s, Colitis, Celiac Disease, IBS and other digestive disorders. But, in my opinion, the workout will benefit anyone. (Of course, check with your doctor before beginning a new or different exercise routine to ensure that you’re able to exercise.)
Zayna Gold, founder of Boston Body with five studios in the Boston area, is a well-known Pilates instructor who’s been lauded not only for her workouts, but for her teaching method. I view lots of exercise and fitness DVDs and some of them are, frankly, a waste of time. This is the second Zayna Gold DVD I’ve worked out to and, as with her Boston Body Barre Sculpt Express, which I still work out to, I will continue to pop this DVD into my player.
Here’s the thing about Zayna Gold – she methodically takes you step by step through each move, explaining the proper way to do it and reminding you to breathe. She keeps up a constant conversation, albeit one-sided (this is a DVD, after all) as she motivates you to keep on going even as she reminds you to check your form and breathe. Doing a Zayna Gold DVD is like working out in an exercise class with a knowledgeable instructor who not only shows you how to properly execute each move but also explains why each particular move is beneficial. You don’t merely follow along, you learn as you go.
Zayna Gold Presents Healing Through Movement is a slow-moving video – but don’t think that because it’s not frenetic and fast-paced, you’re not getting a good workout. The most challenging workouts are the ones during which you rely on your body’s strength to complete the move rather than relying on momentum. Gold concentrates on core strength even as she’s working out your legs, arms or shoulders. (Did you know that you can get as good a core workout while standing as you can while lying down? I didn’t!) Makes sense though that people with digestive disorders may be uncomfortable lying down to work out. Gold devised a workaround for that.
The workout uses light hand weights but, if your strength is not quite there yet, do the DVD without weights. Another thing about working out to a Zayna Gold DVD is that she never makes you feel guilty if you can’t keep up.
The one drawback to this particular DVD is that the production values are not quite up to snuff, but this is a minor criticism given the quality of the workout and the instructor.
I’m a fan. Try this – or any other – of Zayna Gold’s DVDs and you’ll become one too.
