Ever wish you had a personal life coach to provide daily reminders to help you live more healthfully?
You do if you download DTOX, a new mobile app created by well-known interventionist, Rae Dylan, that will allow you to monitor your daily success of overcoming tobacco, food, alcohol, drug, sex and other addictions, including an addiction to anger. On a daily basis, DTOX asks you to assess your mood by choosing one of three icons that stand for happy, neutral or sad. (If you’re aware of your mood, you may understand what drives you to engage in addictive behaviors is the underlying philosophy, I think.) In addition to awareness, DTOX provides daily encouragement in the form of feel-good, you-can-do-it quotes from authors, scholars, musicians, etc. But perhaps the most helpful aspect of DTOX is the community feature that allows you to connect with friends for encouragement and feedback. (Those who’ve successfully overcome an addiction often talk about the importance of support groups and community in their recovery. While not a substitute for these support groups, DTOX serves as an adjunct to them to give you encouragement as you work to change your behavior.) Say you have to lose a few pounds, as I do, DTOX will serve as a daily reminder to keep your eye on your goal. It’s comforting. (I know that’s an odd adjective for a mobile app, but trust me, it’s an accurate one. The other day I was having a weak moment and was about to order a chocolate pastry and a frothy chocolate frappuccino. As I was waiting in line, checking my phone, I saw an encouraging message from DTOX saying something like “You can do it,” and all thoughts of sugary treats left my mind. It was Caffe Americano for me. And I felt good.)
I was offered a free download of DTOX several weeks ago. I have been using it for about two weeks now and I noticed that it’s only for a trial period that is going to end soon. I look forward to my daily assessments, my reminders and the comfort of having a “personal coach” in my pocket so, at the end of the trial period I will download the app. It’s only $3.99. (Pretty good for a personal life coach, wouldn’t you agree?)
Upon signing up, you’ll start receiving daily emails – one a day to your phone’s SMS and another in email- that will remind you to check your mood and log on. While, on this go-round, because it’s only a trial, I didn’t invite friends or create a community but I imagine that the app would be even more beneficial to those who do. With DTOX, you can create your own personal fan club, choose a confidential user name (if you prefer to remain anonymous) and monitor your progress with the app’s timeline. It also asks that you take a photo of yourself once a month. Dieting reviewers love this aspect of the app because it gives them a physical chart of their progress.
