Is MitoQ the Newest Anti-Aging Breakthrough?
MitoQ, founded in New Zealand and, until now, available only overseas, is said to be the most potent antioxidant on the market to date. It hit the shores of the US last month and I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now.
Store shelves (and my closets) are packed with anti-aging creams that promise to be the next miracle cure for wrinkles, uneven skin tone, lack of elasticity and dullness. But do they work? Can we really turn back time by slathering a lotion on our faces? The makers of MitoQ say yes we can – and they say they have the product to do it.
The following may sound like mumbo jumbo, but bear with me as I explain what MitoQ is and how it works. The patented MitoQ molecule, the key ingredient in MitoQ facial cream, is the result of more than ten years of research and development. It is the brainchild of Dr. Michael Murphy, Mitochondrial Biology Unit, Cambridge and Professor Rob Smith, Chemistry Department, Otago University, New Zealand. It is used to deliver antioxidants to the cell’s mitochondria, a membrane-enclosed organelle that generates most of the cell’s supply of energy. Mitochondria are thought to be involved in the body’s aging process. MitoQ is said to neutralize free radicals that contribute to the aging process and to heal prior damage.
Here are some highlights from the company’s literature:
- MitoQ is proven to be 1000 times stronger than CoQ, which is found in some of the best anti-aging products
- MitoQ fades brown spots, skin discolorations and scars
- Skin is noticeably softer within three days
- Skin will look younger within 30 days of continued use
I know you’re dying to know if it works. I generously received a free sample of MitoQ from the company. (It sells for $185.00.) The first thing I noticed about MitoQ is the packaging. It is gorgeous. This may not be a big thing, but for $185 a pop, I wouldn’t expect anything less. Second thing? There’s no fragrance. I love that. My highly allergic skin tolerates it well without any allergic reaction. I will admit that I notice a bit of a tingle after I apply it. Is this wishful thinking or are the heightened levels of antioxidants actually working? My skin does seem more even toned and brighter and I am able to use much less concealer and to even forego foundation on some days. I cannot tell if my skin is any softer. (I don’t even know how to qualify that, frankly.)
One of the things I love about MitoQ is that the literature says to apply it morning and evening to the face, back of hands, neck and decolletage. Back of hands! That is genius! I have never thought of applying face cream to the back of my hands but it makes perfect sense since hands are one of the first body parts to show the signs of aging. When I applied MitoQ to the back of my left hand, it was instantly smoother and brighter. Could that be my imagination? I’m so skeptical – but MitoQ does seem to make a difference in the way the back of my hand looks and feels. While I won’t make any claims of a miracle cream, I will tell you that my manicurist, in a completely unsolicited remark, said my hands looked younger when I had my last manicure two days ago. I wonder if it’s the MitoQ. I’m not using anything else on my hands – although I should be slathering on a sunscreen every single day.
Also, my skin has a tendency to be very ruddy. Bloody hell, I’m a walking tomato – but I did notice that, almost immediately, the skin on my decolletage is less red and splotchy looking. (Hurray!)
MitoQ is safe for even hypersensitive skin (like mine) and can be used in conjunction with your current skin care regimen.
Will MitoQ replace Botox as a proven wrinkle reducer? I don’t think topicals can compete with injectables when it comes to wrinkle reduction – and MitoQ doesn’t claim to do that. But for those unwilling to get a brow-ful of shots every four months, MitoQ may be the product for which you’ve been searching. As for me – I am happy with the results to date and will continue using MitoQ to see just how much it rejuvenates my aging skin.
