Dennis Basso, Fall 2013
Dennis Basso is an icon in the fashion world. This year, he celebrates 30 years in the business and his Fall 2013 collection, which was shown yesterday during New York Fashion Week, was itself a celebration of Basso’s own fashion icons – CZ Guest, Babe Paley, Gloria Guinness and Millicent Rogers – as well as today’s woman.
Basso started out as a furrier and works fur like no one else can. The luxe collection included dyed-to-match sable, mink and fox in evergreen hues, tones of blue and shades of grey. Basso creatively manipulates fur – a grey sable coat looked like corduroy; dark brown fox was combined with black alligator to create an incredibly luxe motorcycle jacket – but it’s his clothing that made me swoon. Hand- layered organza, hand-embroidered tulle, gold lace … heavenly fabrics that, under Basso’s deft control, became even more divine as he crafted them into body-flattering, uber glamorous pieces.
Basso is a master of detail and it was fun, from my vantage point, to see him arrange a model’s dress before she walked onto the runway.
The star-studded audience included Joan Rivers, Carol Alt, Star Jones, Martha Stewart and Joan Collins and the show, which some feared might come under attack from PETA, was marred only by a women in the front row who dropped a magazine onto the runway as a model approached – and we all held our breath. All was fine in the end and it was lovely to see Basso, who usually takes his bows from the beginning of the catwalk, take a full turn on the runway to a standing and adoring crowd.
