Dennis Basso Spring/Summer 2013
The St. Regis Hotel rooftop ballroom was the perfect site to showcase Dennis Basso’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection, inarguably one of this Fashion Week’s most beautiful.
Departing the tents, or more accurately now, Lincoln Center, for a more intimate venue, guests, who circled a raised platform in the center of the room upon which models posed, were able to get up close and personal with the designs, the better to see the rich fabrics (silk organza, chiffon, point d’esprit and lace) and all the details.
Mr. Basso’s inspiration for the collection was the French Riviera of the 1960s “when women always dressed for dinner and each evening was truly gala.” The creams, champagnes and rich blue hues of Mr. Basso’s color palette evoke the sand, sea and sky and the hand-sewn and intricate beading and embroidery, ombre fringe and exquisite lace evoke a time when the parameters of beauty were more closely defined and roundly recognized.
Mr. Basso, known, of course, for his sumptuous fur creations, pulled out all the stops for this eveningwear collection. While there was fur – broadtail, sable and chinchilla, used as fabric in airy, weightless capelets and wraps to ward off a summer night’s chill – it was secondary to the dresses that, fringed, embroidered and beaded, were, in a word, heavenly.
Mr. Basso, as has been stated, is a master of detail. Waists were wrapped with beaded, braided belts that dangled delicately with beaded tassels. The models’ makeup, by Kabuki, was simply beautiful and designed to make the most of a woman’s face. The diamond jewelry, designed by Jane Berg for J & Y Rocks, added a wonderful dimension to the collection. Earrings dangled in various lengths and, I learned from the designer, could be added on to as one would add charms to a bracelet. Clever and beautiful at the same time.
There is no question that Mr. Basso loves women and knows how to dress them. This collection emphasizes that fact in the most exquisite fashion.
FYI, spotted among the guests: Susan Lucci, Nina Garcia, Kelly Bensimon and Star Jones.
