Many women are bothered by dark under eye circles. It’s the subject of Question of the Week …

Nicole from Scottsdale, AZ writes “I have dark under eye circles. It’s not from lack of sleep; it’s just my coloring. What can I do to minimize them?”

Dark under eye circles are extremely common and can occur for a variety of reasons. Nicole realizes that lack of sleep can cause them but heredity, allergies, nutrition and one’s own facial structure and pigmentation may be culprits. Also, as we age, the skin under our eyes becomes thinner allowing small veins to show through which results in darkening under the eyes.

See a doctor or nutritionist if you think your dark under eye circles may be caused by health or lifestyle issues.

Topically speaking, products to combat dark under eye circles abound and range from serums that plump the skin and contain alpha hydroxy acids or Vitamins C or K. However, the jury is out on whether or not these really work.

The best way to combat dark under eye circles is with the judicious use of cosmetics.

Which brings me to another question … which comes first, concealer or foundation? Different beauty experts will give you different advice. I used to apply my concealer before my foundation but found that it left me with light circles under my eyes. Now I apply my concealer after my foundation but you can go whichever way works best for you. Here’s my routine:

Apply your regular foundation, if you wear it, before applying under eye concealer. Then, apply under eye concealer, using the ring finger of your dominant hand to pat it down. If the circles under your eye tend to be blue, use an apricot colored concealer; if they’re closer to red, use a green tinted concealer. (Many experts say an apricot colored concealer is right for most people.)

If your under eye area tends to be dry, mix the concealer in the palm of your hand with a tiny bit of eye cream and pat that on. This will also result in better coverage.

Then gently apply a translucent powder to set the concealer. Finish it off with a tiny bit of your regular foundation. These steps should help to greatly minimize dark circles under your eyes.
