Every season has its beauty looks. Here, Fall 2011 Beauty Trends you’ll want to try now.

M.A.C. Red, $14.50 from M.A.C. Cosmetics

Red Lips. A well-defined bold red lip is one of this fall’s major beauty trends. There’s a shade for everyone but it does take a little getting used to as a red lip makes quite a statement. Not sure you can rock red lipstick? Opt instead for a sheer red stain or go with a berry-stained mouth.  Hints: Bold red lips will bring out redness in your face. Go easy on the blush and be sure to conceal any blemishes or discolorations. Still don’t think you can wear red? You can, but know your skin’s undertones in order to choose your most flattering shade. If you’re ruddy or rosy, choose a cherry red color. Dark-skinned? You can go with any color but deep reds will be most dramatic. If you’ve got yellow undertones, choose a true fire-engine red. A classic red to try: M.A.C .Red, $14.50 from Mac Cosmetics.

Smashbox Brow Tech Trio
Brow Tech Trio from Smashbox, $24.

Bold brows. Uh, they’re back and I am not a fan. While a beautifully-defined brow frames the face, brings attention to the eyes and can take years off your look, the uber-bold brow shown on the runways – for this season and next – is just a little too cavewoman for my taste.  But if you want to give your brows extra definition, choose a pencil a shade lighter than your natural brow color. Brush brow hairs upward and fill in between the hairs with short, staccato pencil dashes. Go over the brow with an eyebrow shadow and stiff eyebrow shadow brush with a powder similar to your natural brow color. My favorite eyebrow shadow: Brow Tech Trio from Smashbox, $24.

The Colossal Volum' Express Mascara from Maybelline

Eyelash Envy. I’m talking tops and bottoms here. For so long, the emphasis has been on the upper lashes and now the bottom ones are getting their due. Hurray! Go ahead – slick on the mascara. A generous coating – or several – on both top and bottom lashes will open up your eyes. Just be sure to clean up smudges. The trend is heavily-mascara’d lashes and no amount is too much. Think spider legs and you’ve got the idea. Frankly, I am loving it. A mascara to try: Volum’ Express The Colossal Mascara by Maybelline, $7.77.

Tarte Cheek Stain in Flush, $30.
Tarte Cheek Stain in Flush, $30,

Blush On! Rosy pink cheeks ruled the runways with cheeks that were pinked high across the cheekbones. Pop a bit of color on the center of your cheeks and blend upward and outwards. For a modern take on the pretty face of the 50s, define your brow, paint on a dramatic cat eye, but skip the red lips and opt instead for a neutral lip. One to try: Cheek Stain in Flush from Tarte, $30. (It’ll last almost forever.)

Clinique Quickliner for Eyes
Clinique Quickliner for Eyes, $15.

Liner Notes. Eyeliner is key this season. From a delicately drawn on cat’s eye to a heavy smudge of pigment, eyeliner is a must have beauty product if you want to follow fall’s trends. Drawing on the perfect line takes a bit of practice. Here are a few tips for getting the line just right: I prefer a pencil liner to liquid which requires a deft hand and a bit more practice. First, apply your concealer to the under eye area. Then, using a sharp pencil (dark brown is my color of choice) draw a line from the inner corner to the outer corner, following your natural lash line. When you get to the outer corner, draw the line up a little bit. For a thicker line, go over the first line but starting from the outer third of your eye – until the line is the desired thickness. For the bottom of the eye, I prefer to line only the outer third of my eye, drawing the bottom line up to meet the top one at the outer corners. For a more dramatic, smoky effect, smudge a dark shadow over the outer third of the lines on both top and bottom. Use a dark shadow in the crease, a bit of highlighter on the brow bone and finish the look with lots of mascara. Meow! One to try: Quickliner for Eyes, from Clinique, $15.

Modern Mercury by Estee Lauder
Pure Color Eyeshadow in Modern Mercury by Estee Lauder, $30.

Heavy Metal. Last season we saw the golden eye and for fall 2011, silver and platinum shine on. One of my fave picks for the silver metallic eye:  Estee Lauder Pure Color Eyeshadow in Modern Mercury ($30.), created by Estee Lauder Creative Makeup Director, Tom Pecheux. But hurry as it’s available for a limited time only from Estee Lauder.

  1. Thanks for the tip about the Clinique Chubby Stick. It’s great for outlining and filling in lips. I also love Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey. It’s my go to lip color and works with everything. At $14. it’s a great buy – especially when there’s a Gift with Purchase. In my opinion, no one does the GWP purchase better than Clinique. Thanks for writing and sharing!
