Thinning hair and hair loss can be devastating, especially for women. Yet, many women are plagued by thinning hair. Some statistics say that about 2/3 of women suffer from thinning hair and hair loss at any given time. While there are many reasons for thinning hair in women, including hormonal imbalances, genetics and illness, “see-through” hair can be a particularly devastating side effect of aging. Research says that most women with thinning hair notice it in their 50s and 60s, although it may have started a decade or more before then.
While there is no cure for thinning hair or baldness, there are many products on the market that claim to thicken hair. Supplements, topical ointments, shampoos and combs and brushes that deliver laser and electro stimulation to the scalp all promise to grow hair. Before you invest, check with your doctor to see if there is a physical cause for thinning hair, read customer reviews and check out companies with the Better Business Bureau for customer complaints.
I intend to do a post on alopecia areata in the future. Alopecia areata, hair loss that results in round patches on the scalp or other areas of the body, is thought to be an autoimmune condition. The cause is unknown, although patients have had success with monthly injections of cortisone into the bald area.
But this post is about diffuse thinning.
Doctors will often prescribe Minoxidil (brand name Rogaine) to stimulate hair growth in cases with diffuse adrogenetic alopecia It’s recommended that women only use the 2% concentration of minoxidil, not 5% used by men, because the FDA has not approved use of the higher concentration in women.
If you don’t want to go that route, Nioxin has positive user reviews – but please check this out for yourself.

This was so helpful. When I went on a crash diet, 7 doctors said “alopecia areata” as I walked in the door. if you do an alopecia article, call me. Please urge people they need vitamins. I think I’m going after Minoxidil bc rogaine didnt help greatly, thank you for fabulously researched insights and report as always.
Im still sleepy — GOING after Nioxin like a crazy person!
Thank you for your honest and brave comment, Sari. Many women have diffuse alopecia which affects the entire scalp. It’s often not noticed until the hair becomes “see through.” Check with your dermatologist to see if Minoxidil is for you. Nioxin will give you the appearance of fuller, thicker hair. (I used it, several years ago, and it did that for me.) I will get in touch with you as I research and write the AA post. Do you take Biotin? Please let me know. Well, we’ll talk … Thanks so much again for your comment!
Nioxin is super expensive, but I’m thinking about using it alongside Minoxidil. They say that it is supposed to help remove DHT from the scalp just as many hair loss products do. Thanks for the information!
