New York’s Fall Fashion Week 2010 ends tomorrow and, with its close, comes the end of the tents in Bryant Park.  The Midtown spot has been Fashion Week’s home since 1993 when New York designers came together to show in one location and is as closely associated with fashion as is the color black. The spring shows will be held at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park in September.

With only one day before the end of New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2010, I thought I’d share my favorite looks thus far and let you know what you’ll be seeing in stores come fall.

I’m mustering all of my strength to refrain from writing “black is the new black”  – but there you have it.  Black, in all of its deep and dark incarnations ruled the runway.  There was black leather, black satin, black velvet, black silk.  Black stood alone or was mixed with various shades of taupe, one of the season’s favorite neutrals.  There was lots of grey, from heather to the deepest charcoal and often, this too was combined with camel or beige as was seen at DKNY, for example.

Some of my favorite pieces include Derek Lam’s beautifully cut charcoal grey trousers that look like they could have been worn by Lauren Bacall or Katherine Hepburn.  His caramel moleskin coat is impeccably tailored and the leather sleeves give it just the right amount of edginess.

There was much to swoon over at Narciso Rodriquez who showed gently curved designs with rounded shoulders and hips that accentuate a woman’s figure.  A fabulous shaded angora and wool coat ranged in hue from charcoal to white and almost makes me wish that next winter is as cold as this one is.

Donna Karan, known for her body-hugging designs took a step back this season – or rather out – and paraded bubble coats, sack dresses and cocoon coats down the runway.  Her palette was mostly black and greys with a few brights but it was her new, less-form-fitting silhouette that made fashion editors take notice.  Her short black coat with its ruffled collar is perfect for evening.

Prabal Gurung wowed in his first fall runway collection that combined beautiful, wearable clothing with impeccable tailoring and the element of surprise.  His cashmere cocoon coat is white coming, black going and beautiful from any angle.  Slim tailored pants were treated similarly with camel in the front and a back view of black.

Victoria Beckham channeled 1940s glamor with form-fitting, figure flattering sheath dresses that  most women would love.  Her red sheath with drapey neckline and belted waist is a particular favorite.

Erin Featherston is also known for her dresses and her 1960s-inspired ivory sheath dress with sheer sleeves is particularly drool worthy.
