Shalimar, the classic fragrance from the House of Guerlain, is about to undergo a redesign of its iconic bottle. The scent, created by Jacques Guerlain, one of the world’s greatest perfumers, was introduced in 1925 and while Shalimar has been presented over the years in a variety of bottle designs, the original and distinctive fluted bottle with its blue stopper and gold label, designed by Raymond Guerlain and Baccarat, is beautiful and instantly recognizable.
So why mess with success?
Guerlain has tapped jewelry designer Jade Jagger, daughter of Mick and Bianca, for the redesign of its flacon. According to Women’s Wear Daily, the new bottle “features a pedestal base, a fan-shaped bottle with clean lines and a smoky gray-blue cap. Jagger chose to finish the bottle with a deep-navy leather tie on its neck.”
I’ve been wearing Shalimar for most of my life and consider it to be one of my signature fragrances. I never tire of its sexy, spicy scent. And, while I love the beauty of the original bottle, I will reserve judgment until September when the new one debuts.
But still, I think that redesigning Shalimar’s classic and identifiable perfume bottle is akin to painting the Chrysler Building red. I’m just sayin’ … (Hm, guess I didn’t reserve my judgment after all.)
