Dennis Basso’s name is synonymous with luxury, elegance and craftsmanship, and all of these were evident in his Spring/Summer 2015 fashion show held yesterday at Lincoln Center. The star-studded audience was abuzz before the show as mere mortals scouted the audience for famous faces. Sitting across from me were Jada Pinkett Smith, Lisa Rinna, Hoda Kotb, public relations executive and TV personality Jonathan Cheban, Coco Rocha, Andre Leon Talley and stylist Philip Block. I also spotted Nicole Miller and Carol Alt and I’m certain there were many more illustrious guests in attendance. But, sadly, there was one who, a fixture at Dennis’s past shows, was not there and her absence left a void that could not be filled. That was Joan Rivers whose friendship with Dennis spanned more than thirty years. After all the guests were seated, Dennis’s voice soared through the darkness and announced that the show was dedicated to his dear friend, Joan Rivers. The announcement was followed by a moment of silence and the audience that had been atwitter waiting for the fashion show to begin paid their respects to the too-soon-departed and sorely missed Joan Rivers.
Dennis Basso Spring/Summer 2015 was inspired by the luxury resorts of the Mediterranean of the 1960s. Those were the days of Jacqueline Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly and any one of these fashion icons would be at home in the pieces in Dennis’s newest collection which was timeless. The collection was elegant, just like the man himself and it was beautiful. Models, hair slicked back into ponytails, floated down the runways in cocktail length and long dresses with fitted bodices and full skirts. Dennis is a master at working with fur and skins and taming them in ways that no other designer can. It seems impossible to create a fur jacket that is light and airy and yet, under Dennis Basso’s hand, it’s done to beautiful effect. But it was the dresses that caught my eye as they took on a life of their own, floating, swirling, dancing and shining down the runway in a color palette of pale blue, white, dove grey and pink. Dennis’s clothing, while beautiful standing still – he employs the finest fabrics including silk gazaar, brocade, faille and silk organza and embellishes them gracefully – becomes alive as it moves and flatters a woman’s body. There were pieces for women of all ages – although women of certain economic means are Dennis’s target customer. They were in attendance and left with a smile on their faces, and thinking, no doubt, of that next party or gala at which to showcase a Dennis Basso creation.
