Need motivation to work out? How about adding music and dance moves to your exercise routine? A recent survey conducted by Zumba that wanted to learn more about the dance-inspired cardio craze found that respondents enjoy moving to music more fun and rewarding than other forms of exercise. Researchers surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults, aged 18+ who currently work out in a gym, class or at home at least once a week. Not surprisingly, respondents stated that the overriding motivation for working out was overall health and physical appearance and that finding time was the greatest obstacle to working out. Here, some highlights from the survey followed by an infographic that neatly sums them up:

Step and Dance participants are most satisfied with progress towards their goals and are also most highly motivated.

Treadmills and free weights are consistently the top elements included in workout routines.

Step is the clear top choice that all exercise groups would like to incorporate in 2014, followed by dance-inspired cardio and elliptical machines.

Nearly four out of five respondents call dance-inspired cardio more fun than a workout.

Lack of time is the biggest obstacle across all types followed by the inability to stay motivated.

Non-dance participants are least satisfied with their goals and find it hardest to stay motivated.

Approximately 80% of dance-inspired cardio participants look forward to their workouts and consider them to be fun while one in seven active Americans dread their workouts.

While interest in boot camp and circuit training classes has actually been shown to be on a downward trend, interest in dance-based fitness such as Zumba is on the rise and leads to more commitment to gym sessions.

The takeaway? The dance-inspired cardio craze is here to stay but even if, like me, you have two left feet and a sense of direction that has you crashing into the person next to you because you turn left when the instructor says to turn right, find something you like to do. Enjoying your workout is the greatest motivator that will keep you on track towards reaching your fitness goals.
